A new study from Canada shows that women with an increased intake of lignans, have lower BMIs and total body fat mass. Lignans are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in many plants, the most common being flaxseed and sesame seeds. This study tracked 115 women and their lignan intake using a 3-day dietary record and blood tests revealed those women with the highest lignan levels had the least body fat and a better metabolic profile.
Lignans are also a great source of dietary fiber, and protect/reduce risk of many types of cancer. In addition a diet rich in lignans has shown to reduce hair loss and improve skin texture.
